Some careers require very specific college majors; other careers do not. Moreover, not all
schools offer every major, and some majors appear under different names at different schools.
And the list of majors at a given school can change from year to year as can the list of
occupations defined by the Department of Labor. So the roadmaps that take you from academic
major to career option must be viewed as general guides rather than precise directions.
Resources for connecting majors and careers exist at both a national level and at Arizona
State University.
On A National Level:
The VCC's Automated Advisor connects your
career exploration test results with relevant occupations. You can then explore academic
programs linked to those occupations. Just follow the "Programs" link under "Getting There"
in the left margin of any occupation. You can reverse the process by following the "Matching
Occupations" link within any specific academic program.
The Automated Advisor uses the terms "program areas" and "programs" in the
same way as some resources use the generic words "department" and "major." However, be
careful! The names and contents of departments and majors are highly variable across campuses;
no such standardization exists.
You may:
- Browse Programs to see a list of 50 broad academic program areas. Then
click on any program area (such as Agriculture) to see specific academic programs contained within that area. Follow the program-name link to explore matching occupations, similar programs, and schools offering that program.
- Browse other national resources providing brief information on
generic majors: The ACT
Major-Occupation Map; the free "Major Information" area of MyMajors.com; the free "Majors Search" area of The Princeton Review; and What can I do with a major?
At Arizona State University:
The Automated Advisor serves a national audience. If you are an Arizona
State University student you will want to take advantage of additional "Majors...to...Careers"
resources developed by ASU's University College advising staff. These academic majors are
real, not generic.
You may:
- Use your Holland (RIASEC) codes to find related ASU majors by
taking the Quick Interest Assessment.
- Use your Career Clusters scores to find related ASU majors.
- Search for ASU majors leading to specific occupations.
